A vehicle's touchscreen and instrument display need their own cleaning plan. A product suitable for a door panel or window is not automatically suitable for a display. Start with the instructions for your exact vehicle and screen.
Read the screen-specific instructions
Ford's owner guidance for certain vehicles recommends a microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and dust from displays, and warns against detergent, solvents or spraying alcohol onto the touchscreen. Tesla's Model S guidance specifies a soft lint-free display cloth and warns against glass cleaner, alcohol-based gel products, wet wipes and statically charged cloths.
These examples show why a general interior-cleaning recipe should not replace the owner's manual. Check your model, year and equipment rather than assuming every screen has the same finish or care requirements.
Prepare before wiping
Park the vehicle before cleaning. Find the manual's display-cleaning section and gather only the materials it permits. Keep the screen cloth separate from towels used on wheels, exterior paint or other interior surfaces.
Where the vehicle offers a screen-cleaning mode, follow its instructions. Tesla describes a Screen Clean Mode that darkens the front display and prevents cleaning touches from changing settings. The availability and steps should be checked for your vehicle.
Do not transfer a dashboard treatment to the display
Clean surrounding surfaces as separate materials. Avoid assuming that a polish, dressing or household glass product belongs on the screen simply because it is nearby. Our article on choosing interior cleaning products provides the broader product-selection context.
Use the approved cloth and technique without escalating to stronger products when a mark remains. If the recommended method does not remove it, ask the vehicle manufacturer or an authorized service provider what to do next.
A useful detailing handoff
If a professional is cleaning the car, identify any aftermarket screen protector and share the applicable care instructions. Ask which materials will be used on the display. A clear discussion before the work is easier than trying to identify a product after it has been applied.
